Articles made of plastics are part of our daily lives. Modern packaging materials are an obvious example. Many components for electrical appliances and electronic equipment would not be possible without the development and use of synthetic plastic materials, thus allowing the current state of the art in communication technology. The use of plastic components in automotive, railway and aviation applications has led to important progress in the transportation sectors. A large volume of plastic products is consumed in the construction sector, e.g., for thermal and electrical insulation, window profiles and pipes. Plastics also make major contributions to health and medicine.
