Unbundling Business Information Management Research: the experiences of the Division of Business Information Management at Glasgow Caledonian University

This paper seeks to share with the wider academic community the experiences of the Division of Business Information Management (BIM) in developing its research profile. The paper sets the context of the Division in terms of its locus in Glasgow Caledonian University before exploring the Division's philosophy, how the Division is structured to encourage a more focused, discipline-based approach to research and the micro-processes are adopted to stimulate research activity and build the research culture. BIM is a Division within the Caledonian Business School (CBS). The CBS is the largest business school in Scotland and the fourth largest in the UK. The school has around 170 academic staff and approximately 4500 students. The structure of the CBS emphasises single discipline Divisions in an attempt to shape the academic focus of the school both in curriculum and in research. This places a clear emphasis on the Divisions to develop their discipline base as well as strengthen their academic and research leadership.
