The commitment by the British Computer Society (BCS) to promote "Professionalism in IT" appears to have spawned an industry in the production of materials to support the initiative. This new publication in the Bizle Professional Series by Essvale is an excellent addition and an ideal companion to the their Business Knowledge for IT in Investment Banking (2006) reviewed in this Journal in August 2007. This new volume is aimed at the IT professional who wishes to develop a sound knowledge of the retail banking sector and is designed to support the BCS initiative to promote the vision of professionals who are comfortable with IT as they are with business. The handbook style is viewed, by the publishers, as an ideal vehicle for imparting effective understanding in a compact and authoritative way. The book is structured into 12 chapters, the first seven of which are concerned with developing a sound understanding of the business components of the retail banking sector. These initial chapters commence with an overview, followed in sequence by product types, the environment, retail banking trends, the mechanism of opening accounts, accessing funds and finally payment systems. Much useful information is included here and the careful reader will emerge with thorough acquaintance with the principal business elements of the sector.
