Assessment of a New Dynamic FE-Code: Application to the Impact of a Yawed-Rod Onto Nonstationary Oblique Plate

The impact of a sphere and a long-rod projectile into stationary and moving oblique plates with combined obliquity and yaw is investigated. The study was done using a three-dimensional dynamic program NET3D, which uses the finite element Lagrangian methods with explicit time integration. A tetrahedral element implemented in the code allows single-point integration, thus no special hourglass control scheme is required. For contact systems, the position code algorithm and the defence node algorithm are used. Results for the simulated final shapes of a long-rod from the impact into stationary and moving oblique plates with combined obliquity and yaw appear to match fairly well with the test values. Hence, the current 3-Dim computer code can allow for the investigation of many interesting three-dimensional dynamic events.
