Atel and SSB approve Nant de Drance

Power producer Atel of Switzerland and the country's federal railway operator SSB are to proceed with the joint construction of the 600 MW Nant de Drance pumped-storage sta- tion at Finhaut in the Swiss Alps. The Board of Directors of Atel and SBB voted in late April to build the CHF 990 million (US$ 950 million) project. Atel will hold 60 per cent of the project, while SBB will own 40 per cent. Atel said that approval was subject to the developers securing a licence and building permit and additional cost limits being set for construction and operation. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2008, with the plant expected to begin commercial service in 2015.
