AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan has an area of 652 000 km~2 and a population of 31.9 million (June 2007). The main agency responsible for urban water supply and piped sewerage is the Central Authority for Water Supply and Sanitation (CAWSS), which is under the Ministry of Public Works (MPW). In recent years, the World Bank and ADB have financed major rehabilitation programmes in the water and power sectors. Years of conflict have severely damaged Afghanistan's power generation, transmission and distribution systems, leaving many people with no access to reliable, modern forms of energy. Only about 7 per cent of people have access to electricity.
