Statkraft considers expansion in Turkey

Statkraft, Europe's leading renewable energy developer and producer, is looking for opportunities for growth in the southeastern part of the continent, most notably Turkey. Norway's State-owned power group, which is currently developing a portfolio of hydro projects in Albania and Turkey, has identified Turkey as its main area for expansion, according to the company's director for southeast Europe, Tima Iyer Utne. "We are focusing on our current portfolio but at the same time we are looking at other hydropower oppor- tunities in the Turkish market for both acquisitions and greenfield projects," she said. Elsewhere in southeast Europe, Statkraft is monitoring opportunities, though it has no concrete plans beyond Albania and Turkey for now, Iyer Utne said. "Southeast Europe is part of Statkraft's international hydro strategic focus area with a total target of 4400 MW by 2017," she explained. "Southeast Europe is a growing part of that portfolio but, of course, SN Power (a joint venture of Statkraft and Norfund) also has ambitious growth targets. We aim to be a major player in all the markets we enter".
