Preface - 4th Asian Bio-Hydrogen Symposium

The challenges and solutions to the development of technology for sustainable energy are a major issue that bridges the academic endeavors of the scientific community to the real problems of the global community. In this light, bio-hydrogen stands as a remarkably useful energy source for alleviating the pressures of limited resources as well as promoting the use of environmentally friendly energy. Produced from renewable resources such as water and organic wastes by biological means, bio-hydrogen represents a hopeful solution to some of the everyday problems that people face in terms of energy needs, not only in Asia, but also all around the world. The fourth Asian Bio-Hydrogen Symposium held in Khon Kaen, Thailand on August 26, 2009 provided an exciting opportunity to reflect on these imperatives. The present issue of International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (IJHE) brings together some of the work presented at this symposium. Coming together a year after the third symposium held in Harbin, China, the participants brought in a large number of papers covering a wide range of topics on the subject of "Bio-hydrogen as a sustainable energy source". The symposium was organized by Research Group for Development of Micro-bial Hydrogen Production Process from Biomass, Khon Kaen University (KKU), and "Asia Bio-HyLinks" (an Asia-based bio-hydrogen association).
