Mediated Modernities and Mythologies in the Opening Ceremonies of 1964 Tokyo, 1988 Seoul and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

摘要

Embedded in the Opening Ceremonies of Tokyo 1964, Seoul 1988 and Beijing 2008 are historical narratives of indigenous culture and contemporary statements of global modernity in visual form. Within the setting of a global spectacle, these visual depictions provide symbolic evidence of host cities and nations asserting East against West, yet East in union with West. The Opening Ceremonies configure national allegories, in the use of the modern media as a powerful medium of the presentation of both tradition and modernity.
