This most comprehensive book reviews all the principal locomotive types introduced in Australia over the past 156 years since the first steam-operated line from Melbourne to Port Melbourne was opened in September 1954 and outlines the traffic operating requirements for which they were built. These conditions varied widely, from the hilly and even mountainous routes in parts of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia (in one case climbing 3500 feet in 35 miles) to over 1000 miles of virtually waterless desert on the Trans-Australian line.
