Textbooks are an unusual genre. Academics rarely read or cite them, yet they are frequently revised, summarise huge quantities of literature and are often written by some of the top minds in their fields. Textbooks have the dual role of reflecting and setting trends in academia, by drawing on new research while shaping the understanding of the next generation of researchers.
