A complex communication network for distribution automation using a fiber optic network and WLANs

摘要

In order to provide electricity economically and safely to users, a Distribution Automation System (DAS) monitors and operates the components of distribution systems remotely through communication networks. Fiber optic communication networks have primarily been used for DASs in Korea because of their huge bandwidth and dielectric noise immunity. However, the fiber optic communication network has some shortcomings, particularly that its installation cost and communication fees are expensive. This paper proposes a complex communication network, where WLANs are linked into a fiber optic network to expand DASs in distribution lines inexpensively. A DAS wireless bridge (DWB) is designed for the proposed communication network using IEEE 802.11a WLAN technology. Feasibility of the proposed network is checked experimentally.
