REENGINEERING OF ANALYSIS AND DESIGN TECHNIQUES TO EXPLOIT THE POTENTIAL OF CASE TOOLS

Case tools generally have been built around pre-analysis and design techniques. This paper argues that more benefit would be obtained if analysis and design techniques were re-engineered so as to make the best use of the capabilities offered by CASE tools. Techniques such as entity-relationship modeling and data flow diagrams have successfully been transferred to the CASE environment, with significant administrative and clerical benefits. However, Case implementation has failed to adequately address important aspects of the modeling process, such as communication, collaboration, and the application of past experience. Ways in which these aspects can be supported pro-actively by case tools are discussed in this paper by using examples from a prototype case tool.
