Design and Implementation of Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulator for Anorectal Malformations Treatment

This paper proposes the design and development of an electrical stimulator that provides a constant output current for neonatal anorectoplasty. The proposed system is composed of a pattern generator, a DC/DC switching circuit, a current regulator and an opto-isolator circuit. The multivibrator circuits are employed to generate a monophasic pulse and burst. The pulse has an adjustable width from 100 is to 10 ms and duration of 0.1 to 100 ms. The pulse is modulated by burst whose width varies from 0.5 to 5 seconds for a duration of 0.5 to 5 seconds. A battery supply is stepped up to 39 Volts by a DC/DC switching circuit and converted to a current source. A current regulator is applied to supply a current signal in range 10 to 100 mA. The opto-isolator circuit driven by the pattern generator provides a current signal through the output. Results demonstrate that the design successfully predict the behavior of the prototype. Furthermore, the proposed system can be implemented as a portable electrical stimulator for anal sphincter anomaly treatment.
