The Annual Best Paper award was instituted in 1985 by the Editorial Board. Since the authors of many high-quality papers have kindly chosen to publish their material in this journal, it is felt that an appropriate recognition should be offered each year to the best among these papers. The procedure used in choosing the winning paper has remained unchanged. Nominations were sought from members of the Editorial Board, and the reviewers of each paper published during the year had also been asked for nominations. The list of nominations was sent to all members of the Editorial Board, who voted for the paper each considered to be most worthy of the award. As before, papers where a member of the Editorial Board was an author were eligible, although the member could neither nominate nor vote for his own paper.
