Mexico lies in the southern part of North America. It is bounded by the United States on the north; the Gulf of Mexico on the east; Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea on the southeast; and the Pacific Ocean on the west and south. The Gulf of California separates the peninsula of Baja California from the mainland. Mexico has an area of approximately 1.97 million square kilometers (760,000 square miles), making in the thirteenth largest country in the world. Mexico's population in 2005 was approximately 103 million. Mexico City is the country's capital and largest metropolitan area. It is the center of commerce, industry and culture. Other large cities include Guadalajara and Monterrey, an important industrial city. The official language is Spanish. English is commonly used for international business.
