Escaping from Russia's shadow

Ukraine wants to test the technical feasibility of reverse flows on its gas interconnector with neighbor Slovakia on May 15. This is a small but the most defined part of a grandiose scheme that Kiev has concocted to transform the former Soviet republic - now a passive transit country - into an important part of Europe's gas market, complete with production, storage and LNG imports (see page 10). Normally in the news for its disputes with Russian monopoly Gazprom which wants to bypass the country through alternative export routes, the government now wants to turn its back on Russia and face west.
