Capital shortfall could be bigger than thought

The head of the bank for international settlements expects banks to meet their remaining capital shortfalls from retained earnings. But he cautioned that large variations in the way banks calculate their risk weighted assets, combined with fears over asset quality, may mean that the actual shortfall could be far larger than the €85.2bn figure previously identified by the BIS.
