The launch of a merchant bank by two former senior Barclays bankers focused on M&A in the energy space has boosted hopes that consolidation in the sector might finally be round the corner. Hugh "Skip"McGee, who headed the UK bank's Americas operations before he walked out last year, and Christopher Winchenbaugh, who was chief operation officer for the region, have launched intrepid financial partners and won praise for their timing and focus from rivals. Immediately the gossip was that McGee, who has been involved in several of the most transformational deals in the sector, was probably positioning for a rush of M&A deals.
