Barclays targets Americas top five

Barclays is confident it can retain its coveted position as top foreign bank in the Americas, even as major rivals such as Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas beef up in the region, and as the UK bank grapples with large-scale internal cuts and a flurry of senior departures. Currently ranked sixth behind the big five US banks, Barclays has already earned US$490m in fees from debt, equity, loan and M&A deals in the year so far. Its 5.7% share of the market is more than a percentage point higher than that of its next rival, and this year could be the best for the franchise since Barclays acquired Lehman Brothers' US operations in 2008.
