ECB adds €1.1trn bid to markets

The EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK will buy €60bn of debt a month under an expanded asset purchase programme designed to shake the eurozone out of six years of economic stagnation and push banks into selling bond holdings so they can use the cash to lend. Monthly purchases of government, supranational, agency and covered bonds and buying of asset-backed securities will go on for at least 19 months, with the ECB in effect committing to inject a minimum of €1.14trn into eurozone debt markets.
