Lending topples records in 2017

A late-year burst of mergers and an unrelenting push by companies to cut borrowing costs propelled US syndicated loan issuance to a record high in 2017, with the corporate tax rate cut that came into effect at the start of the year seen motivating fast-paced lending at least into early 2018. The tax rate was cut to 21% from 35% under the new system, and measures to relax or repeal US leveraged lending guidelines are being considered, which are likely will keep stoking corporate acquisitions and leveraged buyouts, bankers and attorneys said.
