EM green bonds head for US$100bn

Emerging markets green bond issuance could hit US$100bn by 2023 as more countries build green objectives into the post-pandemic recovery period, according to a report by asset manager Amundi and the IFC.That would be more than double the US$40bn raised in 2020, which was 14.3% of the US$280bn global green total, as more countries try to mitigate climate risks and environmental problems and increase resilience to future shocks. The impact of climate change will fall most heavily on emerging markets and the pace of Covid recovery could be delayed until late 2021 or 2022, as the percentage of people vaccinated remains low at 28%, compared with 72% in developed countries, according to UBS.
