No rest for Latin America bankers

While out-of-office messages typically fill the in-boxes of Latin America and Caribbean-focused bankers in the summer months, this August is shaping up to be one of the busiest in recent years for the region's primary bond markets. Uncertainty over the looming US presidential elections, continued fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, ultra low rates and strong investor appetite have borrowers moving sooner rather than later to get ahead of the September rush. The region saw four issuers raise US$2.98bn in the first 11 days of August alone, surpassing volumes for that month in its entirety during the past two years when supply reached just US$200m in 2019 and US$30m in 2018.
