Tailwind energises Japanese PF

Japanese banks are braced for a surge in project financings from the wind power sector that could total as much as ¥3trn (US$26.8bn) as the country scales up its use of renewable energy. The three megabanks - Mizuho, MUFG and SMBC - are expecting debt financings of ¥1.5trn-¥3.0trn from offshore wind farm projects that will add 5.4GW of generating capacity at a total cost of ¥2trn-¥4trn. Bankers expect the first of such financings to emerge as early as this year from one of the five projects in the pipeline, including a 220MW project at Kita-Kyushu port in Fukuoka prefecture.
