Fees fall by most since 2008

Underwriting and advisory fees are set to register their biggest fall since the global financial crisis following a year marred by market turbulence. With just a few days of business left, the industry's total haul of fees stands at just over US$96.7bn, according to Refinitiv data. That is almost 10% down on the record US$107.2bn that banks earned last year, and marks the biggest decline since the 36% plunge in fees in 2008. 2018 is still on course to be the fourth best year for fees since 2000 - or possibly third best depending on activity in the remainder of the year.
