Commission Report Shows 3.4 Percent Rise In 2004 North American Chemical Releases

Industrial releases and transfers of chemicals by North American industries increased in 2004, partially reversing a significant decrease reported for 2003, according to data released Oct. 18 by the Commission on Environmental Cooperation. The most recent available data show that 23,769 reporting facilities in the United States and Canada released or transferred 3.12 million metric tons of chemicals in 2004, an increase of 3.4 percent from the revised total for 2003.
