EU Commission Notes Environment Violations In 17 Countries; Seven to Be Taken to Court

Brussels—The European Commission June 27 moved forward with infringement proceedings for breaches of European Union environmental law in 22 cases involving 17 countries. In nine of the cases, the Commission announced it would take a total of seven EU member states to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which has the power to levy fines against countries found to have failed in implementing EU law.
