World Bank Fund for Climate Change Forms Committees to Oversee Program

The Climate Investment Funds set up by the World Bank to fund energy projects in developing countries, have established the first committees to oversee and implement the program, the World Bank announced Oct. 17. The two primary trust fund committees-the Clean Technology Fund Trust Fund Committee and the Strategic Climate Fund Trust Fund Committee-will each be composed of representatives from seven donor countries and from seven potential recipient countries. The Clean Technology Fund will focus on mitigation, and the Strategic Climate Fund will focus on adaptation; the former is slated to receive about three-quarters of the funds and the latter about a quarter. In all, donor countries have pledged $6.1 billion for the funds (31 INER 912, 10/1/08). Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States will be represented on the Clean Technology Fund committee as donor countries, along with representatives from Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey as potential recipient countries.
