Brazil Environment Minister Outlines Plans To Protect Amazon, Expand Protected Areas

Carlos Minc, Brazil's new environment minister, detailed a series of measures May 29 aimed at protecting the country's Amazon region from further destruction, including economic incentives to ensure sustainable use of the rainforest. Speaking to reporters in Bonn, Germany, during the ninth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations' Convention on Biological Diversity, Minc said Brazil has been able to reduce the rate of deforestation in the Amazon by 60 percent over the past three years.
