Sweden Offers Incentives to Reduce Size of Fishing Fleet, Conserve Fish Stocks

Sweden has announced that it plans to offer financial incentives to trawler owners to scrap their vessels as a way to help secure long-term fish stocks. In addition, new personal severance payments will be made available for fishermen. Forming part of a 200 million Swedish Kronor ($31.8 million) plan, the payments comprise part of an attempt to reduce the nation's large-scale trawling fleet by 30 percent.
