Public Prosecutor Presses State to Complete Sewage System as Part of River Cleanup Plan

The Sao Paulo state prosecutor's office has asked the state government to provide, and to adhere to, a timetable for completing sewage hookups to new wastewater treatment plants to help speed the cleanup of the Tiete River, one of the largest and most polluted waterways in Sao Paulo state, an official with the prosecutor's office told BNA Jan. 14. The Tiete River project, conceived in the early 1990s, was meant to help clean up the river by treating raw sewage dumped into the river or its tributaries by residents of the city of Sao Paulo, which now boasts 18 million people.
