European Commission Calls for U.N. Panel To Coordinate Biodiversity, Ecosystem Policy

The European Union will push for the establishment of a United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystems similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the 27-country bloc's top environment official said Nov. 13.rnThe panel would consolidate scientific and economic knowledge about biodiversity, EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said. Such a panel is needed because the economics of ecosystem loss are only now starting to be understood and continued biodiversity loss at current rates could cost 7 percent of global gross domestic product by 2050, he said.
