摘要

Extreme weather conditions, land degradation, and biofuels' intense competition for cropland are the major causes of the current world food crisis, according to the United Nations Environment Program. In the report The Environmental Food Crisis, UNEP says a surge in food prices has driven more than 110 million people into poverty. The report predicts the demand for food will continue to increase in the period until 2050 as world population grows by 2.7 billion people. Launching the report during the 25th Session of the UNEP Governing Council in Nairobi Feb. 16-20, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said, "Simply cranking up the fertilizer and the pesticide-led production of the 20th century is unlikely to address the challenge."
