Eu Parliament Adopts Climate Change Report That Focuses On Short-, Medium-term Efforts

The European Parliament Feb. 4 adopted the final report of its Temporary Committee on Climate Change, stressing the need for measurable short- and medium-term actions to tackle global warming as part of a road map to a long-term emissions reduction goal. Such measures could include a binding EU target of 20 percent energy efficiency savings by 2020, net zero-energy performance of new homes by 2015, and greenhouse gas reduction targets for agribusiness, according to the report. The long-term goal should be to reduce developed-world emissions 80 percent by 2050, the report said. The European Union already has adopted a series of climate-related targets, including an overall goal of reducing emissions 20 percent by 2020, compared with 1990 levels.
