Parliament votes in favour of more ambitious efforts to tackle climate change

MEPs this week voted in favour of the Climate Change Committee's interim report on "Scientific facts of climate change: findings and recommendations for decision," marking a pivotal step towards legislation on climate change. The report calls for cuts of up to 85 per cent in emissions.The session, despite producing an overwhelming number of votes in favour (556), with 61 voting against and 24 abstaining, a small tide of opposition against the scientific allegations of man-made climate change still apparently lingers. While opposing MEPs, in effect, poured old water on "scientifically unsubstantiated efforts" to discredit studies on the causes and effects of climate change, calling for additional research on the effect of biofuels, others warned that current policies are not enough to stem global wanning in the long term.
