摘要

A coalition of Russian environmental groups called for a temporary ban on offshore drilling in Russian waters, particularly in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic seas, at a June 16 meeting of the Arctic Council.rnEnvironmentalists said the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrates the danger of undertaking oil and gas operations offshore under difficult natural conditions, such as in the icy waters of the Arctic region. They cited a lack of technology available to ensure safe operation in sensitive marine environments or to conduct adequate cleanup activities.
