Australia Issues Latest Data on Pollutants Releases

The Australian government has issued the latest annual data on releases of hazardous substances from more than 4,000 facilities. The inventory, released March 31, is the first to include data based on expanded reporting obligations. The National Pollutant Inventory (NPI), jointly administered by the federal and state governments, requires facilities to report releases of 93 listed hazardous substances, including arsenic, benzene, mercury, and others. Unlike previous years, the 2008-09 data include estimates of quantities of these substances transferred in waste streams to landfills and discharged to tailings dams and sewers.
