Brazil Specifies What Must Be Covered In Safety Plans Required of Dam Operators

The National Waters Agency (ANA), Brazil's policymaking and regulatory body for water resources, has issued a resolution specifying the details of safety plans, including emergency action plans, that owners and operators of dams must draft and implement, an ANA official told BNA May 15.The resolution (No. 91/2012) enables a part of a 2010 federal law (No. 12,334) that requires owners/operators of dams to write and follow such plans. The safety plans are aimed at reducing risk, including environmental risks posed by accidents and flooding (33 INER 1048, 10/27/10).
