South Africa Considers Draft Plan To Manage Used Tires From Vehicles

A draft used tire management plan published by the South African government would give preference to waste avoidance, reuse, and recycling , with disposal as a last resort. The plan, developed by the nonprofit Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (RE-DISA), was published April 17 in the Government Gazette. It is one of three plans being considered by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). Management of waste tires must follow a "hierarchy" that "advocates for avoidance of waste, reuse, recycling and recovery of energy, and disposal as the last option," DEA said in a prepared statement April 18.
