European Commission Calls for Boosting 'Bioeconomy,' Use of Renewable Resources

The European Union should prepare for the post-petroleum era by boosting its "bioeconomy" and more efficiently using renewable resources to meet its food, energy, and materials needs, according to a European Commission action plan published Feb. 13. A bioeconomy based on sustainable agriculture and fisheries and using renewable materials for its industrial processes would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offer more protection for biodiversity, the Commission said.
