Government to Address Illegal Mining, Water Management, Environmental Governance

Representatives from government, environmental groups, and the business sector agree that one of Peru's top environmental priorities for 2013 is getting a handle on illegal mining. Other major issues for the coming year are loosely related to mining issues, including legislative initiatives to strengthen the country's environmental protection norms and agencies and to address problems of water quantity and quality. Illegal mining is defined as extraction of minerals without any form of environmental, labor, or tax per- mits. It is one of the principal sources of deforestation in the jungle and contaminates water and soil with cyanide and mercury used in processing minerals.
