摘要

Israel's legislature (Knesset) has approved a measure that will redirect environmental funds to help disadvantaged and minority communities collect and properly dispose of their waste. Other recent waste disposal developments include a decision by the Environmental Protection Ministry to station so-called Green Police inspectors at military checkpoints to combat illegal waste dumping in the West Bank, an agreement to close Israel's last urban garbage dump by the end of the year, and a pledge to advance legislation to fund the cleanup of contaminants flowing from military industries into nearby soil and water sources. Through its July 31 approval of a temporary amendment to the 1984 Maintenance of Cleanliness Law, the Knesset provided 100 million shekels ($28.3 million) from the Maintenance of Cleanliness Fund to help poor localities establish waste disposal infrastructure and remove environmental hazards.
