Lawmakers Question Conflict Metals Law In Wake of Witnesses' Conflicting Testimony

A U.S. House panel May 21 heard conflicting testimony as to whether a provision in the financial reform statute to increase transparency in the use of conflict minerals has improved conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the wake of the testimony, some Republican members questioned whether the law should be amended or repealed. Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act requires issuers to disclose their use of so-called conflict minerals-tantalum, tin, gold, or tungsten-from the DRC and surrounding countries.
