Canadian Draft Assessments Show Aviation Fuels, Heavy Fuel Oils Do Not Qualify as Toxic

Environment Canada has published draft screening assessments that propose confirming that three aviation fuels and three heavy fuel oils do not meet criteria under Canada's federal environmental laws for designation as toxic substances. The three affected aviation fuels are distillates (petroleum), sweetened middle; naphtha (petroleum), sweetened; and naphtha (petroleum), full-range alkylate butane. The heavy fuel oils are Fuel Oil No. 4, Fuel Oil No. 6, and Residual Fuel Oil. The assessments found that the substances did not meet any of the toxicity criteria under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), the department said in two separate notices published in the April 13 Canada Gazette Part Ⅰ. The draft assessments are open to public comment through June 12.
