Russian Government Adopts National Strategy For Arctic Development Through 2020

Russia has adopted a new strategy for its Arctic region that establishes the basis for development policies through 2020, with an emphasis on environmental protection and sus-tainability as well as resource extraction. President Vladimir Putin on Feb. 20 approved the plan, titled Strategy of the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and Providing for National Safety for the Period to 2020. The strategy affects the federal government and the regions that lie totally or partially within the Arctic Circle. It covers the economic, social, and environmental aspects of the region's development.
