The German Cabinet adopted an ordinance Dec. 3 to simplify and make "more transparent" the process of granting financial support to back renewable energy production. According to an Economics and Energy Ministry statement, the special equalization scheme ordinance will make the process of determining the EEG surcharge-the cost passed on to consumers to support renewables expansion-more transparent, and make collecting the surcharge from those who produce and consume their own energy easier. Those producing their own energy will have the EEG surcharge collected by the regional distribution network rather than the national transmission systems operators.
