Boeing, Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China Team to Turn Cooking Oil Into Aviation Fuel

Boeing and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China opened a pilot plant Oct. 22 designed to demonstrate the feasibility of turning waste cooking oil into aviation fuel on a commercial scale. The first such aviation biofuel plant in China, the facility in Hangzhou relies on methods Hangzhou Energy Engineering & Technology Co. Ltd. (HEET) developed to remove contaminants from waste oil that in China is dubbed "gutter oil," Boeing Commercial Airplanes spokeswoman Jessica Kowal said in an Oct. 27 telephone interview.
