The U.S. and the European Union will not seek to harmonize or mutually recognize regulations on chemicals in the prospective Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnerships (TTIP) agreement, chief negotiators from both sides said Oct. 3. U.S. chief negotiator Dan Mullaney told reporters that the chemicals sector was a good example of where the regulatory systems on both sides of the Atlantic differ to such an extent that cooperation will be in the form of information sharing. "There are many things our negotiators and regulators can do other than harmonization or mutual recognition to reduce costs to consumers and business and help regulators on both sides do their jobs better," he said to reporters following the weeklong seventh round of TTIP talks.
