The European Union's member states should agree to a range of waste recycling and reduction targets to be achieved through 2030, to make the bloc's economy more resilient in the face of rising global demand for raw materials, the European Commission said in a series of proposals published July 2. In particular, EU countries should by 2030 recycle 70 percent of municipal solid waste and should commit to stopping the landfilling of recyclable waste by 2025, the commission said. The commission's proposals also would revise EU rules on packaging waste, by stipulating a binding 80 percent packaging recycling target, to be achieved by 2030. The overall 80 percent target should be achieved by meeting separate targets for different types of packaging, from 60 percent of plastics to 90 percent of paper, card, metals and glass, the commission said. The EU currently has binding targets for 50 percent of household waste to be recycled by 2020, and for bio-degradeable waste sent to landfills to be reduced by July 2016 to 35 percent of its 1995 volume.
